Art X Detroit is not quite over! The Art X Exhibition will be at MOCAD through April 28th. This is the perfect time to see it during regular MOCAD hours. This exhibition presents these artists as they arrive at the culmination of their fellowship period, and shows their continuing explorations in the fields of painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, and mixed-media installations. For some, the time as a Fellow has allowed for the creation of new works specifically for exhibition during Art X Detroit 2013. It has also given some Fellows an opportunity to collaborate with other artists, or to explore an altogether new medium for expression. The Art X Detroit 2013 Exhibition at MOCAD brings forth the latest developments in the ongoing artistic careers of the Kresge Arts Fellows.

Featured artists include: 2011 Kresge Visual Arts Fellows: Corrie Baldauf, Liz Cohen, Olayami Dabls, Design 99, John Dunivant, Bruce Giffin, Scott Hocking, Laith Karmo, Richard Lewis, Hubert Massey, Heather McGill, Mark Newport, and the 2012 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow, Heidi Kaloustian.

“The People’s Vision,” a mural by Hubert Massey

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported Art X. We appreciate your excitement, your willingness to explore new artists, and are thankful for the meaningful exchanges that happened. It was an extraordinary 5 days of programming celebrating the creativity and imagination of the Kresge Eminent Artists and Artist Fellows. This year’s Art X surpassed expectations all around from the buzz on the streets to the crowded venues for the more than 65 performances, readings, exhibitions and panel discussions.

Special thanks to all the venues that participated, including: The Carr Center, the College for Creative Studies, The Detroit Institute of Arts and the Detroit Film Theatre, the Detroit Public Library, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra/Max M. Fisher Music Center/The Music Box, First Congregational Church, the Garfield Lofts Building, the Majestic Entertainment Center/the Magic Stick/Majestic Theatre, the Michigan Science Center, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), the N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art, the Scarab Club, Wayne State University’s Old Main Building and the Wayne State Press Building, and The Wright Museum. Events like Art X are simply not possible without the participation of Detroit’s arts and cultural organizations.

And here’s to the 38 artists who participated in this year’s festival: 2011 Kresge Eminent Artist Bill Harris and 2012 Kresge Eminent Artist Naomi Long Madgett. The 2011 Kresge Visual Arts Fellows: Corrie Baldauf, Liz Cohen, Olayami Dabls, Design 99, John Dunivant, Bruce Giffin, Scott Hocking, Laith Karmo, Richard Lewis, Hubert Massey, Heather McGill, and Mark Newport. The 2012 Kresge Literary Arts Fellows: Cheryl Alston, Mary Jo Firth Gillett, Lolita Hernandez, Kim Hunter, Michael Hurtt, Stephen Mack Jones, Heidi Kaloustian, Peter Markus, Ken Meisel, Marsha Music, Kathleen Pfeiffer, and Mark Stryker. The 2012 Kresge Performing Arts Fellows: Maria Costa, Don Doop Duprie, Laurie Eisenhower, Bryce Harding, Xiao Dong Wei, Kris Johnson, Natasha Miller, Passalacqua, Terry Peake, Chris Pottinger, Ara Topouzian and Shara Worden. Art X is an amazing example of the creativity, innovation and hard work going on within the Detroit arts scene!

For the last two years, Detroit native Aku Kadogo has taught at a university in South Korea. She has been a resident of Australia since 1978. The theater director, choreographer, performer and educator is now back home working with Kresge Foundation Eminent Artist Bill Harris for Art X Detroit 2013.

During a recent rehearsal of her stage performance based on Harris’ book, Booker T. and Them, I had a chance to chat with her about her project and her pride in the MotorCity.

“We agreed to work together so I took his book – he calls it a blues bio – and I’ve taken some excerpts and I’m bringing it to life,” said Kadogo.

The performers take the stage Thursday night at the Charles Wright Museum of African-American History.

The opening-night ceremony of Art X Detroit at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit on Wednesday had some of what you would expect, including lots of mingling among the Detroit art scene’s movers and shakers, installations by many of the festival’s artists and remarks from the event’s organizers.

Then there was performance artist and singer Shara Worden, one of the 30-plus Kresge Fellows whose work and performances populate the event taking over Midtown through Sunday.
